Personality:

When the audience first notices Yukiko Amagi, she had an air around her that screamed ‘elegance and class’. Of course training to run her family’s business, an inn and hot springs that is quite successful will do that to someone. But when you hear them for the first time, one would think Yukiko as a snob and not really care about anything else, right? Not even close on that one! Yukiko may be quiet and introverted from the beginning but as the audience watches her in both the game and anime, we notice that she is a determined young woman trying to figure out what to do with her life on her own terms.

In the beginning, we notice that Yukiko is a quiet young woman who is incredibly smart (we see her discuss questions on a test during the midterms in the game) and very popular with both genders at her school. In fact, there is something called the ‘Amagi Challenge’ in which boys ask Yukiko out and see if she says yes. Spoiler alert: she turns them all down. In all honesty, Yukiko doesn’t feel right when people talk about her looks; it makes her feel uncomfortable. During this time, she really opened up to one other person: her best friend Chie. They have been normally seen together throughout the game and have been good friends for a long time. When they were children, Chie tried to make her smile after she ran away from home with a dog because her family couldn’t take it in. The story has a good ending with Yukiko and Chie becoming very good friends and the other girl able to take in the dog.

As much as we notice Yukiko taking care of the family business and takes over when her mother is unable to, the audience believes that this is what she wants to do in life. We thought at one point that Yukiko had set goals for her life and had a plan together; it was the opposite. When she confronts her shadow, who says that she doesn’t want to work at the inn any longer and pines for her ‘Prince Charming’ to come and rescue her from her life in Inaba, she denies it and naturally, it pisses the shadow off. She then comes to realize that the shadow is speaking the truth and feels like her life is being decided for her. So Yukiko does feel uncertainty of what she wants to do in the future at this point. She’s not perfect despite appearances.

Once the protagonist and the rest of the Investigation Team get to know her, they learn that Yukiko is actually livelier. One thing they notice is her…bizarre taste in humor. As in horrible. She will laugh like a hyena when someone tells a bad joke or if someone puts on Teddie’s ‘special glasses’ which look like a gag joke with its big nose, mustache, and swirly eyed glasses. While everyone else hates them, she finds them hilarious. But it doesn’t happen all the time; when Teddie tries to joke with her, she responds (paraphrasing a bit here)asking if she was supposed to laugh at it. She also shows a competitive side when the team decides to have an omelet making contest with Nakano as the judge, even telling Rise: “I’ll cut you down in one stroke.” She is even seen attempting to cook when she spends time with the protagonist during her Social Link events. Needless to say that she really needs to work on it. Three words: MYSTERY FOOD X.

Yukiko is determined to make her own way in the world and has a strong will as seen while spending time with the protagonist. She expresses that she wishes to leave Inaba and make a career in interior design. At one point, she is shown discussing about books involving the subject. However, when a tabloid crew comes to town and wants to do a story about the inn (mind you, it’s a very crippling one due to the fact that the first murder victim in the series Mayumi Yamano stayed there before she was killed), she tells them off and makes them leave. Afterwards, she tells the protagonist that she wants to stay at the inn but because of her own free will and the fact that she still loves the place. Telling off the reporter made her realize how much she cared for the establishment and finally gave her the answers she was looking for during the series.

To summarize: Yukiko is seen at first as a woman of class and somewhat untouchable. She seemed to be the quiet type that refused any boy who would ask her out and had an idea what she wanted to do after graduation. Once certain events occurred, the audience sees her as a lively girl with bad tastes in cooking and humor but with a strong and kind heart. She is also determined to do things because she feels in her heart that it’s good for her and not because everyone else expects it.

Strengths:

Persona

"A persona, in the word's everyday usage, is a social role or a character played by an actor. The same individuals as actors could play different roles."

~Wikipedia

To put it simply, a persona is a mask that someone can wear. A persona is a part of a person (considered as part of their soul), that can be called to fight. Personae usually take the form of gods and heroes of a certain pantheon with a few exceptions such as Lucifer and Beelzebub. In P4's case, it's Shinto based mostly. When it comes to Persona 4, it is gained by 'facing yourself'. Basically get in a boss fight with your shadow self, accept it, and gain this power. Yukiko gained her’s this way. Personae themselves are vastly different because it depends on the person using them. For example, Yukiko’s focuses on fire magic and healing spells.

Amaterasu: Yukiko’s final tier persona who is focused on fire attacks and defensive spells. Her attacks are listed here. Amaterasu, as well as Yukiko, can resist electricity and block fire attacks.

Compassion

Yukiko is seen as one of the more accepting people among the Investigation Team. After being rescued, she warms up to Teddie despite him being…well, a bear and a shadow. She’s a kind person who believes in the best of everyone with few exceptions such as Tohru Adachi and a group of reporters who wanted to destroy the good image of her home. She also seen as a patient person and tries to remain calm, not raising her voice or trying to keep the others level headed such as when the protagonist had the choice to throw Namatame into the TV or not.

Determination

Despite being a quiet woman, Yukiko has some major strong will and determination. After her rescue from the TV World, she doesn’t try to revert back to her normal life but chooses to join the team in solving the case. She refuses to give up when things are at its bleakest or say ‘I cannot do this’ but it doesn’t happen all the time. She refuses to give up during the fight with Adachi, actually calling him childish and throwing tantrums when he doesn't get his way. Her desire to protect her friends triumphs over her fear of being hurt. She has the upmost faith in her friends to do the right thing even when hope seems to be at its dimmest.

Weaknesses:

Like everyone, Yukiko has her weaknesses because let’s face it: Persona 4 is about facing the darker side of one’s self and overcoming it. She is not an exception (otherwise it would make her a protag /shot).

To start off, Yukiko focuses on magic and long distance fighting. Which means she is weakest when it comes to close range combat as well as physical skills. She is not very strong physically so any punches she makes is about the average human’s. Along with this, she is very susceptible to normal injuries such as broken bones and gashes because she is human...er pony. Also because she uses fire based magic, she is weak to cold and ice.

As shown with her Shadow (and lots of symbolism in her boss battle), Yukiko does not like the feeling of being ‘caged up’ as well as the feeling of depending on other people to bail her out. In the beginning of the series, her relationship with her best friend Chie shows how dependent she is on her. At one point, she calls her a prince and hopes that she would get her out of Inaba. When that thought was crushed, it devastated her. This is why she wanted to help out the team as much as she can even if all she can do is heal.

If there’s something Yukiko is afraid of doing, it’s telling others how she truly feels and constantly worrying about every little thing. Again, how she felt about being 'forced' to inherit the inn and how everyone seemed to depend on her to keep the Amagi name on the door.

Yukiko to put it bluntly…is a derp. She can be spacey despite getting excellent grades in school. However her street smarts are severely lacking. Not to mention her cooking is…er, well…uh, Mystery Food X.

Possessions: The clothes on her back (pony version), her TV World glasses, Boundless Sea (her ultimate weapon), a small change purse with some money.

Pony/Animal Type: Unicorn. When she fights, Yukiko’s focus is on magic and defensive spells through her persona Amaterasu. She’s not very strong physically except when throwing wooden buckets at peeping boys. Or punching certain Magicians in the gut. Not Chie 'cracking balls' level but meh.

Cutie Mark: Three pink cherry blossoms. Cherry blossoms are something of a tradition in Japan and Yukiko is part of a family that holds onto that with their inn. In the beginning she seemed to go along the lines of what a traditional housewife should be until people get to know her. As a note, her initial persona was called ‘Konohona Sakuya’ whose symbol in Japanese mythology is the cherry blossom.

Third Person:

It only took one blink for Yukiko to realize that the setting in front of her was not the Inaba train station. She...remembered this place rather well despite her memories of said place never reaching the surface back home. It was...Ponyville, right? She looked down to see the familiar four legs, white coat, and hooves and let the memories to the place rush back to her.

That's right, Yu was with her then too. But now...she stood alone with the little items she had around her, feeling like she should be scared. It was like staring out into that fog again except the only way out of it was lost on her. But there was a difference as Yukiko picked up her fan and looked over the town's skyline; confidence.

She might be alone in this world but she knew about the kind ponies who lived here during her last stay. She wouldn't be able to keep herself attached to Yu's hip this time...Yukiko would have to take those first steps on her own. And honestly? She didn't mind it. Sooner or later, the priestess would have to face her fears and be able to see past the fog with her own strength. She knew she had power already.

Yukiko just had to move forward and see with her own eyes that she could stand alone. But even without her friends...Chie...even Yu...she knew that she was never truly alone. With confident steps, the pony started to walk back to the town of Ponyville and ready to face what was ahead of her.
